The entire world of chess enthusiasts was agog with excitement. It was the 44th chess Olympiad, originally scheduled to be held in Russia, which was postponed in 2020, because of the Covid pandemic, and was slated for 2022, to be hosted by Moscow. But Russia trained her guns on Ukraine on February 24, 2022 and this war zone was no longer a viable hosting ground for the world’s largest chess tournament. Fortunately, for India, we put up our gallant bid to hold the competition on our soil, and the FIDE kindly accepted our pitch.
